The panel is clipped in but also glued down around the perimeter to stop water getting in.
It looks as though the rigidity of the plastic and the perimeter of adhesive causes issue in some cars and cracks begin to form.
The problem is that, underneath this panel are holes that lead through to the cabin. So it only take a bit of rain and you have a waterfall feature in the car.
What Could This Cause?
The main reported issue is the alarm going off continuously but it could also blow fuses or send an SOS to smart service.
What Should I Do?
As soon as you notice the crack, take a load of photos and then cover the cracks with tape to stop any water ingress. Then contact smart and report it to them for a warranty repair. They are aware of the issue so you shouldn’t have problems getting it booked in.
