They had the parking pawl which manually locks the gearbox when the shifter is in park. When you turn the ignition to position 1, it releases a solenoid so you can press the button and pull the gear lever backwards out of park.
But sometimes the solenoid gets stuck and you can’t get it out of park. No panic though, you can manually take it out of park so you can drive the car.
I’ll visually show you the lever to make it easier to understand. However, you don’t have to do this. You just need something like a screwdriver. I’ll cover the easier non-visual procedure shortly.
There’s a cap under the handbrake that you lever out to reveal a Torx screw. Remove it.
If you have any attachments like the cup holder, remove it.
Lift the SE Drive cover forwards and up.
Now you can see the magic lever.
It’s yellow, just like morning wee.
Put the key in the ignition and…
…start the car as usual.
Lift the lever, push the button on the gear knob and pull the gear stick backwards into drive.

As mentioned before, you don’t need to remove all of that stuff, you can jam a screwdriver under the cover and lift the lever as long as you know where it is.
