Turbo, Non MHD Non Turbo & Diesel Only
It’s getting to the point now where people are experiencing worn starter motor brushes but what is more likely is that the copper braided cable between the starter motor solenoid and the motor brushes.
If your starter motor becomes intermittent and then fails, have a look at the braided bridging wire. Touch it and see if it crumbles to dust. This was on a car I bought from Copart. It wouldn’t start so I got the car very cheaply.

Disconnect the battery earth cable and remove the starter motor. Look at the end of the motor.

Remove the long bolts with an 8mm socket…

…and then remove the 2 Philips head screws with a screwdriver.

This is the one I bought. Click here.
The assembly is used in a lot of Mitsubishi vehicles which shouldn’t be a great surprise as the 451 engine is Mitsubishi.
The same assembly is used in some Nissans and the Dodge Dart.
