If it doesn’t start on 0 then it won’t be accurate when the car is running.
This usually happens for 1 of 3 reasons.
You have changed the dials so removed the needle and put it on in the wrong place.
The needle is touching the back face which is stopping it from moving correctly.
There was a connection issue so the rev counter lost power or RPM data.
The Universal Fix
Access the needle. Take off the decorative ring.
Use a thin flat blade screwdriver to lever the front out.
There are clips on each side.
Make sure the face is sitting flat and the needle isn’t touching the face at any point.
Turn the car on so the engine is running and turn it off. Manually push the needle around to 0 then try starting the engine again. If the needle returns to 0 every time you turn the engine off, it’s fixed.
It’s Still Not On Zero
Pull the needle off carefully. Don’t rotate the needle. A fork or a pry tool works fine.
They aren’t held on with much force.
Turn the car on so the engine is running and turn it off. Push the needle straight on without twisting so it points to zero. Start the engine and shut it down a few times to ensure it sits at zero as expected.
The Rev Counter Doesn’t Work At All
Check the connection on the back of the speedo (red box shown below). Make sure it’s seated correctly and the terminals aren’t corroded. Speedo removal can be found here.
Check to see if you have the additional RF choke attached inline with the gauge wiring.
If you do, just disconnect the gauge from it and throw the add-on board in the bin. Plug the gauge directly into the back of the speedo.
