451 Licence Plate Bulbs

Some people like to lever the bulb holders out of the panel from the outside. I’m not one of those people. It’s too easy to damage the metal tab on the holders and removing the holders properly is an easy job. Open the boot of your 451. Each end of the lower boot flap is a Torx 25 screw. Remove them both.

Open the storage flap and you’ll see 4x Torx 25 screws, 2 each side. Remove them all.

The top of the panel can now be pulled away to reveal the internals.

Look over the top to see the licence plate lights.

It is possible to change the bulbs from this position but to make it easier you can pull off the spade terminals from each end, push in the metal clip on the right end of the licence plate light holder and then the holder will push out of the panel. The old bulb just pulls out and the replacement pushes straight in.

What Bulbs?

As standard, the bulbs are C5W at 39mm long, AKA 581 39mm, AKA 39mm festoon bulbs.

If you want to replace them with LEDs you will need 39mm long festoon LED lights in white. LEDs only work 1 way around so if you fit them and they don’t light, take them out, turn them 180 degrees and refit. LEDs have a directional light unlike the standard bulb so make sure the LEDs face lowards the lens.
