They both have the same layout and design but the Viper has a carbon fibre shroud instead of the Venom’s powdercoated metal shroud. The big difference is the weight and the price between the two.Designed and sold by Smartarse Design and manufactured by Pipercross it replaces the smart’s original airbox, this allows for a larger filter to be used. The existing side air intake becomes redundant and the new pipercross filter gives you a few choices for the new cold air feed.
Naked
The filter is just left in the engine bay with no extra cold air feed tube attached.
Personally this is my favoured choice and doesn’t seem to affect performance.
The Trunk
The first fitments had the cold air feed trailing down to the bottom of the engine, sometimes they were zip tied up, facing forwards or just flapping about untethered. The problem with this layout was it looked silly and had the ability to slip down and suck up stray puddles.
The Scoop
An adaptation of the above but instead of hanging loose, a big hole is drilled into the side of the intercooler air scoop and the pipe is attached in there. This is currently their preferred fitting method but i’m not a fan of it. Drawing that much air from the intercooler scoop robs air that should be passing across the intercooler. This increases the temperature of the air going into the engine which then reduces the performance offered by the filter.
Fitting
The airbox is removed and the original TIK pipe and elbow is fitted to the Venom or Viper. The cold feed pipe can them be run if required. The ECU must be repositioned as it attaches to the side of the airbox that is removed. This involves creating a new bracket and drilling 2 holes in the car.
Performance
There is no denying that the filters work well, the less convoluted route and the better filter offer an increase in BHP and torque. Another thing worth the mention is the new induction sound, it’s awesome. In a standard smart, the induction noise is shielded by the airbox but the new setup allows the noise to reverb in the engine bay making it more prominent.

Evilution ConclusionI can’t recommend the Viper simply due to the cost but the equivalent Venom is far better priced although still a bit top heavy for an enclosed filter and a cold feed tube, not exactly what I would call an induction “kit”. (Evil)
