Mod Description
We all know you can't push start an auto but the smart isn't actually a true auto. It's in the manual but who reads that?

Push/Bump Starting

Bump or push starting your car is required when the battery is too dead to turn the engine using the starter motor.
You have to select a gear and either roll down a hill or have the car pushed so the road wheels will
turn the engine fast enough for the clutch to engage and start the combustion cycle of the engine.

Instructions For

Fortwo 999cc (451)
Fortwo 800cc diesel (451)

Method

Turn ignition to position 1,

Hold the foot brake and push the gear lever right to select gear 1,

Push the gear lever forward again to select gear 2,

Release footbrake,

Press accelerator to the floor while still stationary,

Start rolling or get someone to push,

Once the car is moving the clutch will automatically engage and the engine will start.

Instructions For

Fortwo 600cc
Fortwo 700cc
Fortwo 800cc (450)

Release all the brakes and start rolling or get someone to push,

Once you reach about 10mph quickly lift the clutch,

The engine should start and you will drive off.

Why Did You Have To Bump Start?

3 possible reasons spring to mind,
The battery is dead,
The alternator is faulty,
the starter motor is siezed.

How Do I know Which one It Is?

The battery is located in the passenger footwell under the foam block, test the battery with a multimeter to determine the voltage. It should show over 12 volts.

Start the car up and place the multimeter on the battery terminals again, if the alternator is working correctly you should be able to read a voltage of about 14.2 volts or higher.

If the starter motor is siezed, the engine won’t turn over dispite the battery being fine. Once the car has been push started it should drive normally and the battery light shouldn’t be illuminated at any time.
