SE Drive (Gear Stick) Removal

There are two main things stopping you from just removing the SE Drive:

The seat subframes
The security bolts holding the SE Drive down

Special Tool Required

You require a 5 splined T30 security Torx bit. It is different to your standard Torx bits.

The correct tool can be bought here or from smart, using part number 450 589 03 09 00 for a lot more money.

SE Drive?

Another smart-ism. It’s short for Sequential Drive. It’s just the gear lever that selects the sequential gears. The SE Drive unit also holds the key barrel, starter switch and the gearstick locking mechanism. It’s the same unit used in the 450 fortwo, 451 fortwo and 452 Roadster.
